Jamal and Salim grew up seeing violence because of where they lived, and became used to it. They had been born into absolute poverty and at such a young age had no way out. At this point the boys are all alone; they only had a mother so now they have to survive on their own. You can see from the movie that people in Mumbai are not afraid to use authority. If the people feel like they are more superior or upper class that they have the right to treat the lower class with little respect.
For instance when the boys are late for school the teacher had no problem hitting Jamal on top of the head with a book, he treats him as if he is his own child.
The film commonly suggests that money corrupts; this can be seen in many instances such as when Jamal and his brother Salim begin scamming people into tours of the Taj Mahal or how Javed expresses his wealth through a richly decorated house. A key message brought in towards the end of the film is that Money is less important than love, we see this when Salim sets Latika free and sacrifices himself for the preservation of others.
It can also be seen when Jamal speaks to Latika over the phone and realising that she is safe no longer cares about the million dollar question at hand. Throughout the course of the film, each character displays differing amounts of control over their lives. Latika has limited influence over her destiny unlike Salim who has the most. Jamal however, experiences a mix of influences as well as his own decisions which influence his fate.
Latika lives her life making minimal decisions about her destiny. As a young, beautiful, female, she is constantly targeted by men. As this began when she was an orphaned child, it became her way of life.
She never had to make decisions about her life, as someone was always there to do it for her. When she does try to take control, such as when her, Salim and Jamal ran away from Maman, it resulted in her being punished. This control by men is highlighted in the close up Salim letting go of Latikas hand during their escape from Maman.
This action ultimately decides that she will be under Mamans control. Again, whilst in Mamans possession, her path is being chosen for her. Again, whilst she is with the brothers, she needs not make any decisions as they are all made for her. Salim decides that Latika is now his, not Jamals. He tells her that he loves her, and asks her to meet him in the train station at She rejects his love but, none the less, plans to escape to the train station. When she attempts to meet him at the train station, all goes horrible wrong.
She is recaptured by Javed with the help of Salim and carried away. During the viewing of the game show, Salim gives Latika his cell phone. He asks for her forgiveness and tells her to go to Jamel. This leads him to talk to Latika, and gives him happiness.
When laved hears Latika on the show, he knows what has happened. He goes back to seek vengeance and finds Salim. Salim shoots and kills him before being killed himself. Jamel ends up winning the million dollars, and finally reuniting with his long lost love.
The circumstances that these three children are living in, are less than ideal. Not only is their life surrounded by the violence from the Bombay riots, they are also orphaned and under the care of gangsters. You can see that they believe that money can buy them happiness and the good life.
When Jamel and Latika are sitting on the porch stairs talking about living in a big house on Harbour Street, it is their idea of a fantasy world. He truly believes that a nice house and money would make him happy. As Jamel grows, you can see him realize that his relationships are more important.
Salim however, does not come to this conclusion and suffers from it. One example in the book, was the story of the Yagua village in the Amazon. These people live in a traditional village with no modern technology, and very little contact to the outside world. They are very happy people, and enjoy their life. The difference between these people and the children from Slumdog Millionaire, is for one, the lack of family and a providing fgure in their life.
